Pennsylvania Car Accident Lawyer Reminds Motorists About Dangers of Drunk Driving

Pennsylvania Car Accident Lawyer Reminds Motorists About Dangers of Drunk Driving

J. Christopher Munley

Scranton, PA (PRWEB) December 7, 2010

Motorists who ignore the risks of drunk driving should take a hard look at the Pennsylvania State Police Report from this past Thanksgiving weekend, says Pennsylvania car accident lawyer J. Christopher Munley.

According to the report released last week, 17 people died and 348 others were injured in 1,101 investigated automobile accidents on Pennsylvania streets, roads and interstates during the holiday weekend. Those numbers marked an increase from the 2009 Thanksgiving period, when three people died and 303 were injured in 886 investigated crashes.

The weekend’s holiday accidents included 79-alcohol related car wrecks, with six of those crashes involving one or more fatalities. More than 400 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence during the five-day period from Nov. 24-28.

“This should be a wake-up call,” says Munley, the managing partner of Munley, Munley & Cartwright, P.C., a Scranton, Pennsylvania personal injury law firm that represents car, truck and motorcycle accident victims and their families, including those harmed in drunk driving accidents.

“This report should remind drivers that you face not only criminal consequences if you get behind the wheel while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol, but you also place yourself and others at risk of accidents, injuries and death,” Munley says. “The bottom line is don’t drink and drive.”

Thanks to the Checkpoint Strikeforce Program, Pennsylvania State Police have made strides in recent years to cut down on drunk-driving accidents. The program has netted 3,347 DUI/DWI arrests at checkpoints and another 1,305 arrests through roving patrols.

But law enforcement alone can’t eliminate DUI/DWI accidents, Munley says. Instead, it requires individuals being responsible and making safer decisions.

“Instead of driving drunk, you can designate a sober driver, take a cab or some other form of public transportation or arrange for a friend or family member to help you find a safe way home,” Munley says.

According to Munley, impaired driving can cause a motorist to weave lanes, make wide or abrupt turns and follow other cars too closely. Drunk drivers may also fail to use their brakes properly or maintain reasonable speeds, he says.

“Our law firm has a successful history of helping drunk driving-accident victims and their families recover compensation for their medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering,” Munley says. “But you can never truly compensate for the loss of a loved one. That’s why it’s important to drive sober or stay off the roads if you have been drinking.”
