What the Wedding Planner Can’t Teach You – Survival Skills for Wedded Bliss – Advice on Overcoming Moral, Financial and Lifestyle Issues that Couples Face

(PRWEB) May 25, 2005

The flowers have been ordered, the brides maid’s dress colors picked and you and your fiancé are on the fast track to a joyous wedding day. But, are you on track with your relationship? After, “and they lived happily ever after,” what happens next?

The fact is that couples spend twice as much time discussing wedding plans than they do considering the impact their upbringing, background, and individual expectations will have on their relationship? Ands if you start out coming from different social, religious or ethnic backgrounds, the chances for a problem marriage increases, unless you work out the details before you walk down that aisle.

According to Dr. Ruby Payne, couples who come from different class backgrounds have different expectations, priorities, and goals, and cultural or class differences can cause serious unexpected conflict in regard to subjects such as finance management, family commitment, and raising children. Payne, a Ph.D. who works with psychologists, educators, lawyers and judges on the hidden rules of class, the key is communication and an open mind. Her new book, Crossing the Tracks for Love, highlights everyday examples and exercises that aid couples in identifying and resolving potential issues of conflict based on class upbringing so they can learn how to better understand what motivates their partner’s behavior.

The first step according to Payne is for couples to talk as much about their nitty-gritty expectations of marriage as they do about their wedding reception menu. Conflicts can be surprisingly simple according to Payne, one example she offers: a newlywed bride, who comes from an upper middle class background, opens a cell phone plan and picks a top of the line model valued at 0. After a couple of weeks, she accidentally loses it and wants to replace it for the exact same phone, which will cost another 0. Her new husband, who grew up in a modest home with few luxuries, believes that she doesn’t need that expensive phone and can’t understand why she can’t just pick the standard model. In some instances a major fight could ensue from this seemingly mundane situation, but if the couple work together to understand the dimensions of each other’s class background they will be able to better navigate the sometimes bumpy road of wedded bliss, and be better able to deal with other issues in their lifetime together.

Though some relationship experts would have you believe “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus,” in actuality, conflicts in relationship are caused less by genders differences and more by class structure. Payne’s Crossing the Tracks for Love evaluates how common occurrences may or may not affect a person based on what type of class mindset they come from – Poverty, Middle Class or Wealthy, thus determining the often hidden boundaries and rules we live by. Once these hidden rules are identified and recognized, couples can than learn how to communicate, compromise, coexist, and thrive in their relationships.

Crossing the Tracks for Love: What to Do When You and Your Partner Grew Up in Different Worlds by Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D.; Published by Aha! Process Inc., April 2005; ISBN: 1-929229-33-X

Legal Education

Do you think you have what it takes to pursue a legal education and practice the noble profession of law? Perhaps a closer look at this area of learning can provide you with some clues.

In a nutshell, a legal education is simply the education of individuals who intend to become attorneys and judges or some other legal professional. It is also pursued by those who intend to use a law degree towards some end, such as a career in politics or the academe, or another end which has no relation to law, such as business entrepreneurship..

A legal education covers both academic and vocational studies. A main requirement is for students to acquire an academic grounding in the legal system of their jurisdiction before they can obtain a law degree. For many, this is the hardest part of pursuing law as it entails endless hours of study and analysis, which is not a natural inclination of many students.

Before they can practice as lawyers, law students are required to demonstrate that they have learned professional skills such as advocacy and analysis. For instance, in many countries, law is an undergraduate degree and graduates of such a program can only become lawyers by passing the country’s equivalent of a bar exam. There are post-graduate programs available to help students specialize in a particular area of law.

In contrast, law is a graduate degree in the United States which students can only undertake after completing an undergraduate degree is some other field, whether related to law or not. Most American lawyers hold bachelor’s degrees in the humanities and social sciences. In many cases, law schools are an autonomous entity within a larger university.

Meanwhile, in Canada and other Commonwealth countries as well as in many other places around the world, a law school is referred to as a faculty of law, which is distinguished from a law school in the sense that a faculty is a subdivision of a university and is on the same rank with other faculties.. Also, in other countries, the final stages of a vocational legal education required to qualify to practice law are carried out outside the university system.

The legal system plays a fundamental role in protecting the rights of individuals. Working in the legal profession is often viewed as a lucrative and rewarding career. There are many areas that a layer can specialize in. One area that is both challenging and lucrative is criminal law. A criminal lawyer has the opportunity to work in legal defense, prosecution, and even pursue a career as a trial judge.

Criminal lawyers, or criminal attorneys, advise and represent those who are accused and charged with a criminal act. They present evidence, advocate for their client by arguing on their behalf in court, and also make sure their clients’ rights are not violated. Like other lawyers, criminal lawyers must follow a strict code of conduct and ethics.

There are a number of educational steps one has to take in order to obtain a successful career as a criminal lawyer:

1.) The educational requirements to become a criminal lawyer are normally 4 years of undergraduate study followed by 3 years of law school. A bachelor’s degree is required for law school admission. Courses taken in a number of different in areas is considered an asset. Courses can include: English, social studies, political science, public speaking, government, philosophy, and history, are useful. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice can be very valuable when applying to law school. One may also want to consider volunteering or working in some area of criminal law.

2.) The next step of a career path to criminal law is to apply to an accredited and recognized law school. You first have to take the Law School Admissions Test, or LSAT. The LSAT exam is used as a standard assessment tool by law schools. The LSAT is given four times per year at hundreds of locations across North America. The test is designed to assess an applicant’s propensity for practicing law.

3.) Acceptance by most law schools depends on the applicant’s LSAT scores, the applicant’s undergraduate school’s standing in the education community, and prior work or volunteer experience. There may also be a personal interview. Once accepted into law school, there is three years of intensive study. At the end of the three years, one will acquire a law degree. Law school graduates receive the degree of juris doctor. (J.D.) Generally, one cannot work as an attorney until taking and passing the bar exam. Each state has its own bar exam. Graduates will need to pass the bar exam in the state(s) where they intend to practice law. After passing the bar exam, a license to practice law will be granted, and one can begin to practice criminal law in that state. A person must be licensed to practice law in the courts of any state or other criminal field. Many states also require applicants to pass a separate written ethics examination. Graduate lawyers usually begin their careers as associates working with experienced criminal lawyers or trial judges.

Criminal law is one area that is seen as a successful career choice. Criminal law is a challenging career but plays an important role in ensuring that the judicial system maintains and promotes equality and justice for all.
